Why Slowing Down Doesn’t Mean Falling Behind
When we hear the word “success,” many of us instantly picture long hours, constant hustle, and sacrificing everything to reach the top. But what if that isn’t the only way?
I believe from my own experience that you can be wildly successful while living a slow, intentional life. Slowing down doesn’t mean you’re lazy, unmotivated, or lacking ambition. It simply means you’re choosing to use your time and energy wisely.
Success Doesn’t Require Chaos
Success doesn’t have to look like burnout, answering emails at midnight, saying yes to every opportunity, or trying to do everything yourself just to “prove” something. In fact, that’s often the quickest route to exhaustion, not success.
Case study: Jim, in his 40s, has a wife and kids, and from the outside, it looks like he has it all. But behind the scenes? He’s chasing every opportunity, working on low-value tasks, and constantly stretched thin.
He won’t delegate because he doesn’t want to let people down. Even if it means spending all day doing a £20 job that drains his time and energy. He works late, misses quality family time, and his employees are constantly stressed ,because he radiates that stress himself.
Here’s the Truth: Busy Doesn’t Always Mean Productive
Living slowly doesn’t mean life is stress-free 24/7. BUT it removes a lot of the unnecessary stress we carry from trying to do too much, all the time.
Instead of always doing more, slow living invites us to ask:
✨ What’s actually important?
✨ What truly moves the needle in my life or business?
✨ Where is my time best spent?
The 80/20 Rule Changes Everything
You’ve probably heard of the 80/20 rule, that 80% of your results come from just 20% of your actions. When I started living and working with that in mind, everything changed.
I stopped wasting time on things that didn’t bring results, joy, or peace.
I learned to say no more often.
I started giving myself permission to rest and recharge.
And instead of feeling lazy or behind, I started feeling clear, focused, and in control.

Slow Doesn’t Mean Weak
We’ve been conditioned to believe that slowing down means we’re not doing enough. That we need to be “on” 24/7. You hear it all the time from entrepreneurs and athletes online:
“You have to work harder than everyone else.” or “Sleep when you’re dead.”
But here’s the truth: A few solid, focused hours of work will always beat a 12-hour day of scattered, distracted hustle.
Slowing down doesn’t mean you’re doing less, it means you’re doing what actually matters.
You Deserve Both Success and Peace
Running a business isn’t easy. People often don’t understand how much time, energy, and mental space it takes and many expect your time, skills, or products for free or cheap. But that doesn’t mean you have to burn out trying to meet everyone’s expectations. You get to choose what your version of success looks like and can say no.
Want to take action?
- Try this: Make a list of everything you’re doing this week. Circle the 20% that brings the most results or peace and cut back on the rest.
- Ask yourself daily: Am I doing this because it’s important, or just because I feel like I “should”?
